| This pattern was taken from the book "Twinkle Sews" by Wenlan Chia. The front cover description is "25 handmade fashions from the runway to your wardrobe". Inside the cover it says, "To wear a Twinkle piece is to feel both flirtatious and smart. To make one yourself is all that and more."
Pattern Description: A camisole embellished with multiple straps, bias strips and beads. The camisole is cut on the straight and has princess seaming. The armholes and edges are bound with bias strips, which also form the straps.
Pattern Sizing:I made Sz 8, based on the sizing chart in the book. There were some funny directions about taking your measurements, adding ease and seam allowances and comparing that to the size chart, but I just chose my size based on measurments alone and it seemed to fit.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?Not really, but that was because of the fabrics I chose. This top could look very different made up in different fabrics. My central strips were linen, which makes them much more substantial than the designer's strips.
Were the instructions easy to follow?I must confess to only glancing at them. The book has a chapter on general sewing directions and then written step-by=-step, but not illustrated, directions for each design. Fabric suggestions and quantities are provided.
The patterns are provided on a disk to be printed out. They are provided in both a pdf and Adobe Illustrator format, one size to a file.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?I just love the design. It allows you so much creativity to result in a very unique garment.
Fabric Used:My base fabric was a silk georgette that was printed with satiny flowers (or maybe it was a burnt-out fabric, I don't know). I bought it on sale at Gardams (Brisbane, Australia) a few years ago.
My inner strips were linen. One of these was not actually cut on the bias, but it was a loose weave, so I thought it would work. I did pink the edges.
One of my outer strips was actually a charmeuse flounce, left over from a previous flouncy top. I quite like the variation of using a flounce instead of strip...adds a little more interest.
One of my strips was synthetic. It was the right colour, but not as soft as the other strips, so I lay a strip of the base fabric over the top of it to continue the floaty feel.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:Only changed the strips, as outlined above.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?I will definitely sew this again. I was so excited to make this, I just made my stash fabrics work. Next time I think I will go looking for fabrics more like the original.
Conclusion: This is a fabulous book and I can't wait to make up more designs.
