Cute! I've got the pattern traced for my daughter to use as undershirts but haven't actually made one yet. Had exactly the same thoughts as you about the binding - if it drove me crazy, I was going to add a seam allowance to the pattern and do the elastic/foldover thing you did!

It looks really cute! I stick with binding for myself, even though elastic IS so much easier - it tends to chafe me in hot weather.
