I think it looks very nice but I do know what you mean about kimono sleeves sticking up a bit - has happened to me so try curving the shoulder seam towards the hem - that may help but as said it looks really nice - the fabric is so beautiful

I think it looks gorgeous! You picked a beautiful fabric, and the pattern shows it off well. But I can understand the reluctance with the sleeves, if that isn't your thing. I like your modifications already. You could try to tuck or pleat it at the top of the sleeve, where it sticks out, and either attach a tie or a tab or something (possibly in a contrasting colour) to hold the tuck closed. This would draw the winged out sleeve closer to your arm. I hope that makes sense. :)

I love it too! Totally get you about the Madame Butterfly / culturally appropriate feeling though.
