I looked at a few tutorials to make my daughter a smocked top, and one said to cut the fabric twice as wide as her chest. It was way too big. I decided to try about 1.5 times her chest measurement next time. Please post an update if you find the perfect ratio! The top row did gather under a narrow hem for me, but it was a cotton fabric and didn't shrink up until I held a steam iron over it. Thank you for all the information in your review, it's so helpful and the dress looks so comfy!

Oh wow New Mama! Thanks for the info. I didn't think of steaming it! I'll remember that next time. For this fabric at least, I found that cutting it 1/3 wider than her chest worked thankfully. Thanks for the compliment!
