It's the pattern...not the sewist. I had exactly the same problem you did and as another reviewer. I even did a differential feed on my serger on the edge to shorten and thought I figured it out. I'm working on it now and might feed elastic around the neckline or do like you did. Yours turned out great despite the pattern!
