Misses' Dress "Easy to Sew"
Size 20 (1955) so, 38 bust.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Nope, it looked BETTER
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Great instructions for a vintage pattern, except the zipper - which says "follow the instructions that came with the zipper." Normally that would mean "go to sewing book & look up the best way to do a side lapped zipper" - but at 11 p.m. I thought I'd just wing it - I've done this before. Well, I sewed the second side firmly down the center of the teeth. Now, that was a joy to rip out.
Lesson learned from this dress - don't sew tired. Just put the garment down and walk away!!
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I like the circle skirt with a shirtwaist combo - this will be a great summer dress. It's also a timeless pattern if you cut the different hem lengths given.
I used a colorful cotton seersucker that I picked up from The Textile in Greenfield, MA while on vacation there. It sews like a dream and is very forgiving. I used a lightweight woven fusible interfacing, and it did very well with the seersucker - didn't straighten out the puckers. Thanks Pellon!
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I did my standard small high bust alteration. The pattern was surprisingly close to my normal alterations. I squared the shoulder only about 1/4 inch, and to be honest I could have skipped that. I shortened the hem, because I only had so much fabric for that huge skirt.
I also decided to use buttons on the belt - I had some extras and I think I'll like it better. I made it extendible by 1" - in case of a big lunch
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I can see sewing it again with a half-circle skirt.
I recommend this pattern - it's a classic, and really the photos on the front don't do it justice.
