| UPDATE: My niece loves her Christmas present, and I can now post about it on FehrTrade.com! I've updated this review (and the post) with photos of her wearing it!
This is a Christmas present for my niece, so I can't post it on Fehrtrade.com yet as she reads the site. But I wanted to share this review while it's still fresh in my mind. I'll update this review once I have photos of her wearing it after Christmas!
Pattern Description:
This is a girls' tunic pattern for knits with long sleeves, scooped neck, empire waist seam with gathered skirt and shaped, mid-thigh hem.
Pattern Sizing:
116-176cm heights. My 10 year old niece is 5 feet tall and size 152 matches her measurements almost exactly so I made that size.
I LOVE that Young Image cover tween sizes in so many of their patterns!!
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Mostly! The gathering isn't quite like in the tech drawing - the gathering on the pattern pieces is in one section in the centre front, rather than in two segments. I double-checked the pattern sheet to make sure I wasn't just omitting a mark, and then also experimented to see if the gathering would work concentrated in two spots, but fell back on the one long stretch of gathering, which I think looks really good here.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
The English instructions are sparse - think Burda magazine. I've read through them again right now and they make sense apart from "10. Stitch a seam at the bottom of the sleeves" which really just means to hem the sleeves.
Since this is a simple design, I really just constructed them in my own preferred way, sewing the sleeves in flat being the main deviation.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I love that:
1. It's a versatile, flattering, and easy-to-wear design
2. It's available in a huge size range!
3. The gathers are really flattering
4. The shaped hem is a lovely detail
5. It's nicely drafted and the corners all match up, and without too much excess in the sleeve cap (my pet peeve)!
I really don't have any dislikes!
Fabric Used:
Purple cotton jersey from my stash, which my mom said looked like my niece's taste.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
A serging mishap during the construction of the front gathered seam meant the horizontal seam is raised one inch here. I had to cut out the old seam (there is no way I will ever unpick an overlocked seam just to gain 1/4" back!), and then I raised the back seam by the same amount to keep everything matching.
As reports suggest that my niece has really long arms, I lengthened the sleeve by 2".
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I would totally sew this again - she's still not at the top of the size range so I could easily convert this to short sleeves and size up if necessary for a Spring or Summer look. I highly recommend this to others who sew for tweens - so many great designs and they're nicely drafted, too.
Conclusion:
I really hope she likes her present - my mom's going to buy her some leggings to coordinate with it so she'll get a matching outfit under the tree!
No post on FehrTrade.com about this yet - you get the sneak peek! So I need to link to indvidual photos instead: Front view Back view Upper front detail Neckline detail Upper back detail
