Pattern Description: From the envelope: Fitted and lined. Not very helpful, is it? It's a nice dress, with cap-type sleeves, front and back darts, center back zipper, wide v neckline. Simple but rather elegant.
Pattern Sizing: 6-20 I made a size 6 grading to an 8 at the waist.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, it did. It was an accurate picture.
Were the instructions easy to follow? Nope. Sure weren't. I mean, they were easy to understand, but the techniques were rather difficult to execute. Butterick has you sew the sleeve pieces to the fronts and backs and then sew the lining fronts and backs to the fabric fronts and backs. And then you sew the dress together. It was awkward and clunky. And made it difficult to do any fit adjustments. I gave up near the end and resorted to hand sewing for some parts.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? Love the neckline and the sleeves. Hated the construction, but I already complained about that :o)
Fabric Used: I bought it online and it was labelled a wool suiting. It has a twill weave and a slightly nappy texture, so I'm pretty sure it's wool flannel. It was a dream to sew and easy to press. I have a couple more yards of this fabric and I look forward to working with it again.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: No design changes really, but I did have to do a fair amount of fit adjustments. I took the sides seams in from underarm to waist and had to take up the shoulder seams at the neckline. I also had to lengthen the bust darts almost 2 inches. And I used an invisible zipper instead of a centered one.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes, actually. I'm planning to sew it again, but not use Butterick's instructions. There's got to be a better and easier way to put this together. And, yes, I would recommend it. It's a beautiful dress, you just need to sew it your own way :o)
Conclusion: Gorgeous dress. Needs better instructions, but aside from that, a great project.

The contests are great motivators and you kept yours for an extra day! Good on you that you kept going and finished your lovely dress, with excellent fit. I'm sure you'll enjoy your new LBD and why not vacuum with it for a change of pace?
