Pattern Description: Lace Kimono

Pattern Sizing: 36-44

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, I think so!

Were the instructions easy to follow? I sew a lot of Burda and in all honestly this was one of the least understandable sets of instructions I've ever come across. Not only were the instructions difficult to decipher, but it seems like they have you construct this robe in the most complicated way possible. I think there are several better and more simple ways to construct this garment.

That said, this is not a difficult pattern to sew. I think a confident beginner could do very well with it if they simply tossed the instructions and instead read inkspot's review (and blog post) detailing a better and easier construction method. (I refer to it on my blog.)

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love the style! There are some really great details like the deep, traditional sleeves that can be used like pockets to store your love letters and other secret items. And I like the ties. The armscye area, with it's window is another great traditional detail that elevates this robe from kimono-style to kimono. The pattern is very good, and it's a shame that the instructions are so poor. I hope that hasn't put people off from sewing it.

Also good for a beginner is that this pattern required little to no fitting. It's meant to be geometric and boxy, so the fit is easy.

Fabric Used: For the shell I used an inexpensive but incredibly fun stretch animal print pattern lace. For the lining and facings I used stretch silk charmeuse.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I lengthened the robe by 9" and widened the side/gusset piece a bit to give some extra room at the hips. I also used a decorative stitch for the lining hem.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes and yes. I love how it came out and have been enjoying wearing it. It looks and feels luxurious on.

Conclusion: This is a really lovely pattern with wonderful details that is hampered by bad instructions! Chuck the instructions and you are left with a beautiful pattern.

thanks for the tip to my blog: I did do a long tutorial on how to make this perfectly and quickly, using the machine for most of the garment. (Inkstain) http://chanelno6.blogspot.ch/

No problem, inkstain. I'd still be scratching my head at Burda's instructions if not for your post!
