I wanted a Christmassy Christmas Dress.
I've never had a designated Christmas Dress before, but working in a fabric store has it's perks and one is that they sponsor fabric for up to one outfit each month provided the customers can make something just like it (meaning we have enough fabric in stock) and can make it from a pattern we have.
On a Sunday (or sewing-for-fun-day, as it's called around here) I did a Design Sketch and drew the pattern, and this past Sunday I sewed it up.
So this looks awfully a lot like the a-line dress in the fabric store brand, but is in fact a Birgitte Basic tee pattern that I made longer and wider at the skirt part. Then I made some back darts to help with fitting in the back.
As for alterations, I had done my usual T-shirt Full Bust Adjustment and also a forward shoulder alteration. But other than that - it's just the standard pattern made longer and with a skirt.
The fabric is this Burgundy (well, they call it bordeaux) cotton Stretch velour from the fabric store where I work and it's trimmed with this fake fur.
Sewing was easy. For the neckline I simply sewed invisible elastic to the wrong side of the seam allowance (just holding it taut - not stretching it) and then folded the seam allowance over and zigzagged from the right side. Only problem was when I cut the strips for the fake fur, I had little bits of fur all over. I stitched the fake fur wrong side to right side of the dress, using a long straight stitch. I overlapped it a bit at the ends.
This was such a fun project, and I'm really happy with the result! I've never had a designated christmas dress before, but I'm going to wear this as many days as I can before Christmas, (and on the holidays) so I'll be tired of it when Christmas is over...
Worn outside my house (in it's natural habitat, it seems)H E R E.
