Pattern Description: From the Style Arc website: This is an easy to sew, unlined coat with a fabulous collar – wear it up hugging the neck or open to give a more casual look. Great deep buttoned pockets that are able to carry all that you need. Interesting seam treatment along with the bound edges gives this coat a unique look.
The Grace coat is a fashionable over coat and will become one of your favourites.

Pattern Sizing: Australian sizing 6-30. I made my usual size 18. It is a loose-fitting pattern, so when I did the FBA, I added to the length only, since there was enough width.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? I made quite a few intentional changes. So yes and no.

Collar folded down.

Snuggly warm!
Closeup of selvedge on sleeve hem, curved welt pocket, and toggle clasp

Were the instructions easy to follow? I didn't really use them. I made extensive changes.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I loved the silhouette which is loose fitting with a large armscye, so it is easy to wear and will go over lots of garments. But it's not *too* big and overwhelming. A perfect draft!

Fabric Used: Novelty black and white reversible wool for the main body. I didn't have enough of it for the facings, so I used a solid black wool for those. I used two lining fabrics as I didn't have enough of either. I used a solid black silk charmeuse that was fused with interfacing (so it was easy to cut and sew) for the sleeve and pocket linings, and a wild black and white poly charmeuse print to line the body.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: Lots! This is a partial list, there is more info on the blog.

  • Made the closure asymmetric.

  • Swapped out the collar for a simple rectangular collar.

  • Instead of buttons or snaps, used two toggle-style clasps. I used some special leather tools to punch the holes in these.

  • Instead of the pockets with flaps, I used curved welt pockets.

  • Used the fabric selvedge on the right front edge and the sleeve hems.

  • Added darts, but sewed them as curved darts.

  • Added 1" shoulder pads.

  • Omitted the cuffs, and made the sleeves longer to fold them back.

  • The coat is unlined, but I drafted linings and facings. (The original front facings didn't accommodate the asymmetric closure.

  • I used a couple covered large-sized washers in the hem at the back to improve the hang.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes! This is a fabulous coat! I can already tell this will be my go-to winter coat.

Conclusion: A *great* pattern with a great fit. More on the blog, including more pics and more info on how I did the toggle closures.
