Pattern Description:
From oliver+s web site: "Girl's skirt, knit top, and knit dress pattern. Gathered skirt (designed for woven fabrics) features elastic-back waistband, front button placket, and pleated pocket detail. Pullover, gathered-front knit top or dress includes both long- and short-sleeve options. Top and dress are designed only for knits with at least 25% stretch."
I made only the dress.
Pattern Sizing:
Two ranges, 6M-4 and 5-12. I made a size 7 (pattern says it fits a 25.5-inch chest, my daughter is a 22.5-inch chest).
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes. As others have noted, oliver+s directions generally are very well written, with clear instructions and helpful diagrams. They include finished garment measurements and a glossary of terms.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Like: The crossover yoke is interesting, without being too fussy. It elevates it from a simple t-shirt, for sure. The pattern was well drafted, all of the pieces fit together without any fudging. The pattern paper is a nice weight, with dark lines that are easy to see through tracing paper. (Btw, the pieces are not nested, so you can't tell at a glance how much 1 size varies from another.)
Dislike: When the bodice is elongated into an A-line dress, it starts to look... boring, even with the lively printed fabric. It reminded me of a nightgown, actually. I think it's better as a top, not a dress.
Weird thing: Despite using a fabric with the requisite stretch and making 2 sizes bigger than what my girl measured to, the neck opening seemed small and rather high. We have to pop her head through it with some force every time she puts it on. I double-checked that I traced the correct size.
Fabric Used:
A cotton knit from Girl Charlee (who said in turn that it was from the RTW line Fresh Produce).
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I used clear swimsuit elastic instead of the recommended interfacing or twill tape and used a coverstitch machine for the hems. I added elastic to the sleeve hems, too. I deepened the lower hem of the dress to 1 inch because I didn't want it flipping upward after washing.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I think I will sew another one of these, but only as a top and in an even larger size. I will likely lengthen the yoke to give more head room.
Conclusion:
This was pretty easy to sew and my daughter seems happy with the dress. I call it a win! |
