| Pattern Description:
Gertie's Sultry Sheath Dress - but with full skirt modification
Pattern Sizing:
I made the 38 inch bust size, my bust is 39". Enlarged the waist to 34 inches by adding width to the sides.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Mostly!
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Basic for someone who sews all the time. A complete novice might be stumped, but Gertie's book is aimed at the experienced beginner anyway.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Likes: Retro style that goes with everything. The pattern is a breeze to sew as well. Also, the patterns are sized for a larger busted girl so no need for a FBA!
Dislikes: The original fit - I'll explain my design changes below. Didnt like the dirndl used in the original either.
Fabric Used:
100% cotton drill from a friend's stash.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
Where to start?
- shortened the bodice length by 1.5 inches,
- lowered dart points as they came up well over my bust line
- re-drafted the shoulder straps to actually stay on my shoulder - the original pattern is almost an off the shoulder number and a bit odd.
- changed the sweetheart neckline to a more v-shape
- the darts under the bust looked a bit loose, so I did a shaped dart
- changed the dirndl skirt to be a more flattering box pleat instead, using my favourite instructions from Enid Gilchrist (on my blog)
- made a matching belt (after I took the photo, of course!)
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes and yes.
I'm already planning on making one in black, with a square neckline.
Conclusion:
A great simple design, but make a muslin! I rejigged mine 4 times before I was happy and its totally worth the effort (I hate muslins).
Another plus, it only takes 3m of fabric!
