| Pattern Description:
From the HotPatterns web site:
"When your wardrobe demands a superchic but easy to wear knit dress or top, these gorgeous faux wrap styles are just the thing, perfect in fluid light or medium weight knit fabrics, like rayon, bamboo, modal, silk jersey, or ITY (interlocking twist yarns) knits.
Faux wrap dress & top with side seam zipper closure have gathers at the front shoulder, and a choice of cut on cap orelbow-length dolman sleeves. Top and dress have a bound back neckline, a shaped center back seam and a fitted waistband, and feature a wrapped front skirt overlay, which drapes into the top edge of the waistband. Dress finishes just below the knee, top finishes at mid hip.
Make either of these fabulous styles in your favorite solid color, or a groovy print, but also consider mixing your prints or solids for a super-cool and modern look."
For this version, I sewed the Dolman-sleeved top.
Pattern Sizing:
HotPatterns sizes 6-26. HotPatterns sizes run close to US RTW sizes. For this pattern, I sewed a size 20, which I selected by finding my full bust/hip measurement from the size chart and dropping down a size. I am happy with the amount of ease (not too much or too little) in the finished top.
Note: As you can see from the photo, I am very full-busted. There is plenty of bust room in this pattern. Smaller busted seamstresses may need to tweak accordingly.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Pretty much. The dolman sleeve opening has a bit of a closer fit on my large upper arms than the envelope drawing (but you can see this in the tech drawing). The part of the skirt that drapes over the waistband is wider in my version, but that will be a super-easy fix in future versions--simply gather that section more.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yup. No complaints about the instructions. This is an easy top to construct with some nice details and no real fussy bits. The "Advanced Beginner" rating is appropriate for this pattern.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Likes:
The finished top is pretty and flattering. The deep cross-over neckline is flattering on a full bust, and the wrap-over skirt hides a tummy. I think this top/dress would be flattering on most figure types (with the possible exception of apples and maybe thick rectangles--although I could see the shaping maybe creating curves there). It's also a quick top to put together. After cutting out (which was pretty fast), I think it took me *maybe* 3 hours to sew the whole thing, and that's with a 6-month-old baby.
Dislikes:
This is nit-picky, but the v-neck is a bit low on my large bust. I'll need to wear a cami under this (not a big deal) and will need to adjust the pattern for more coverage when I make my "fancy" version. Since the CF isn't marked on the bodice pattern piece, I didn't catch this until I tried on the top.
Fabric Used:
"Release the Hounds" ITY jersey from Gorgeous Fabrics Contrast waistband was black poly/lycra jersey from my stash.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I omitted the side-seam invisible zipper. That's it. (And I have no trouble getting the top off and on. I think you'll be fine with omitting the zipper as long as you use a knit with good recovery.)
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I made this version as a test run to make a "fancy" top for my company holiday party (held in mid-January). I love the finished top and will be proceeding with the fancy version. I think this will also look really cute as a dress, and at some point, I'll make up the dress version of this, too. I would definitely recommend this to others--it's a great pattern.
Conclusion:
This pattern has been out for a few months, and frankly, I'm shocked that I'm the first person to review it. If this were a Big 4 pattern, I'd have to think that there'd be a dozen reviews for this by now with its figure-flattering details. If you have this pattern in your stash and have been hesitating while waiting for a review, definitely give it a shot!
