Pattern Description: Fitted, lined jacket with princess seams, two-piece sleeves, and standing collar. Pleat at lower back creates a slight peplum look. Front pockets are in princess seams.
I made View B with the contrasting collar, pockets, and pleat, but I did not include the braided trim.
Jacket Back
Pattern Sizing:10 -24. I cut a 10, but ended up letting the side seams out a bit from the bust down. The initial fit was quite snug, and did look more like the pattern picture. I could have stayed with that, but decided to let out the seams for insurance .
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes!
Were the instructions easy to follow? Surprisingly enough for Burda, the instructions were quite good. There were a couple of places where I had to puzzle out what to do, but that's nothing for a Burda pattern! Being a fitted, lined jacket with many pieces, this is a time-consuming pattern, but it is pretty easy to construct.
One thing to note about the instructions: After you attach sleeves, it is common to trim the lower part of the armscye between notches, to eliminate bulk. The instructions don't tell you to do this for some reason, but I did it anyway and I think it helped with the fit.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love the riding jacket styling. And Burda's drafting is wonderful. The jacket is very comfortable to wear. The only dislike is that the pockets are pretty small since they have to fit in the space between the princess seam and the center front of the jacket. However, they are big enough to hold small items.
Fabric Used: The main fabric is a loose-ish weave 100% wool. The contrast is velveteen, and the lining is Bemberg rayon. The lining is brown, which I like, but it wasn't a deliberate choice - it was the darkest lining in my stash and I'm trying to use what I have instead of buying.
To make the buttonholes, I used a new-to-me notion called Space Tape, which I can recommend for those of us who have trouble making straight buttonholes . I cheated on the buttons - I found pre-made velveteen covered ones at Joann. Thank goodness, because I never have much luck making my own.
I couldn't find anywhere on the pattern that specified the size of the buttons or of the shoulder pads. I used 3/8" shoulder pads and 7/8" buttons.
What alterations did you make? This pattern is only available in Petite sizing. Although I fit in the Petite height measurements, petite tops are usually too short in the torso and arms for me. So I added 1 inch to all the pattern pieces at the lengthen/shorten lines. Also, I added sleeve heads because I have never used them before and wanted to try them out. I used instructions found in the Fall 2012 issue of Sew Stylish to make them. Funnily enough, the sample jacket they used looks to be in the same fabric as mine, only in pink!
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I probably won't make View B again but might make View A some day. I do highly recommend the pattern to others. I think even an experienced beginner could do well with this pattern.
Conclusion: A unique fitted and lined jacket that's easy to put together.
