| Pattern Description: Simplicity 9520 Dog Coat, View E
Pattern Sizing: This view is for a large dog, but runs small
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow? The instructions were easy to follow, but they conflicted with the layout of the pattern pieces on the material. The pattern layout shows the front piece to be on the fold (ie. a single piece). The instructions show the front of the coat as two separate pieces with a center seam and a front opening at the neck with velcro closures.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like that the pattern is easy to sew and that I can make many of them for the shelter dogs. What I disliked is that this view (E) shows that it should fit a Golden Retriever, but it runs small.
Fabric Used: I used repurposed clothing to make both of the coats pictured. The blue and white coat is from denim jeans and white sweat pants. The black coat is from a pair of repurposed polyester sweat pants. A knit material is recommended for this particular view of the pattern.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: It was necessary to lengthen the back and increase the overall girth. Had I lined the coats, as the pattern wants, I would have had to add more to the overall circumference.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes, and Yes.
Conclusion: I sew many of these coats for the shelter dogs. I repurpose clothing as the source of my material. This gives me the opportunity to be green and to use a varitety of color and fabric combinations. The coat may be sewn with or without the collar and with or without the sleeves. The coat may also be sewn with or without the opening at the neck with the velcro closures. There are many possibilities for this particular coat. Though not done for this contest as it was against the rules, the front may be comprised of two pieces, that are not sewn together in the middle, but are fastened together wiht velcro along the entire center front. Another alternative would be to make the front a single piece and to make the back as two separate pieces, fastened with velcro down the entire length. Both of those alternatives would allow for easy dressing and removal.

How sweet. We rescued an old dog that lived with us a year, she looked just like this one. Very cute!

Hi All, Thank you for your kind words. I hope the shelter dogs are enjoying the coats. Last year's coats can be seen here: http://s973.beta.photobucket.com/user/EINSTEIN100/library/Dog%20Coats/2012/#/user/EINSTEIN100/library/Dog%20Coats/2012?&_suid=135993583602907856190361481462 My dog was a good sport in modeling coats that are not for him. His coat is currently in progress.
