Grey wool dress, two neckline variations

Pattern Description:
Closely fitting sheath dress for wovens with cowl neck and side gathering detail. I used the downloadable pattern.
Pattern Sizing:
34-42
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow?
I was fine with them. As this is the illustrated sewing course featured for one pattern in every issue, it has a rather detailed instruction. That is, compared to the usual instructions. If you are used to pattern envelope instructions with looots of pictures for every little step, then these instructions are scarce.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Wondering why the cowl is cut on straight grain. I thought cowls must be cut on bias to have them hang correctly. Also, straight skirt cut on bias is not the best for my pear shaped figure. But: the waist gathering is great, and the cowl is fun. With my soft wool fabric, I am able to fold it into a cowl with turning over the neckline into the dress (so 4 layers of fabric there). But my husband likes it better with the "origami-fold".
Fabric Used:
Thin, soft, drapey suiting wool.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I lay the pattern such as to have the skirt part on straight grain. I shortened the dress by 2 inches (I am small). I also shortened the sleeves, due to lack of fabric. I also made a small swayback alteration, taking out a little less than 1cm in the CB. Should have done a little more and should have interfaced the zipper area with a band before sewing. This way there are slight wrinkles in the back...
I had difficulty gathering the side to the given 5cm (2inch), even though I had fine wool fabric. Don't know how one is supposed to gather it to this with tweed?! Maybe putting folds would do the trick?!
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes! It is a wonderful dress! A nice dress to dress up in - not too unique, but enough detail to be interesting. The waist gathering looks great. I am thinking of sewing this up in a knit.
Conclusion:
A wonderful, for an experienced sewer quickly sewn dress that has that certain something while looking classic enough. Great LBD pattern.

*** I made my picture using a flash, which reveals every little wrinkle in a merciless way. These don't do the dress justice - it really doesn't look like a wrinkles mess in real life, the gathering is flattering and more subtle.***

Perfect sleeve length, love the origami-fold look, very good look for your body type (mine too), and the grey snakeskin-look shoes make it work. Makes me wish I didn't give up my Burda subscription. Beautiful dress, would cross professional and night-out very well. Knit sounds great too...cowl would drape more then, although the fold is nice.

I didn't think much of this dress in the magazine, but your version is very attractive and nicely fitted. I thought the same things as you did about the grain layout, and wondered how the cowl would really lay. Thanks for your pics of the dress to show how it can be done.
