With gathers, I find if I run one row of say a 4 or 5 stitch length in just inside the seam allowance and another just outside the seam allowance and pull on the two lower threads (together) that y.ou can arrange the gathers easily and then sew in between the gather lines on the seam line quite easily. And then just pull out the gathering stitches.
