| Why is this woman smiling? (well I was in the original photo!) Because this arduous jacket is finally finished!!! There's nothing obviously difficult about this pattern, it just snowballed because I added a full lining, underlining, stabilizer, heavyish fabric and recut the collar. It's a rather nice design that hasn't gotten a whole lot of love.
This fabric must have been a huge overrun..I see it here and there on various fabric web shops. I had cut the bulk of the 3 yrds into a FAIL/wadder, but because of the cut I was able to squeeze parts of this jacket in, as long as I cut the stripes sideways. I also had to take in the shoulders an inch to fit the fabric piece but in the end it fit better anyway. So it was a save with what is a rather nice mid priced boucle.
I decided to underline all the pieces in voile for extra stability, warmth and to avoid using fusible as the pattern suggested for the entire front. I just don't have the happiest relationship to fusibles over large areas. I like it for stabilizing seams and collars though.
I lost a little sleep trying to get around the "lined to the edge" approach, but once I settled on this nice wool shirting (soft and smooth) in a very close shade, it all came together nicely. It has a little woven design in it, but somehow it works really well. Stashing fabric is so essential! The sleeves are lined with ambiance with the cuff facing in the wool shirting.
The pockets on this are the attraction/conundrum. The fear and thrill is getting the second one to come out as well as the first! I could not recut...not enough fabric left, so it was a little worrisome. I also fretted over the construction and attachment of the collar and ended up using what I call the "coat" method and kept the collar seam separate from the lining...too much bulk when stitched up according to directions in one fell swoop.
I pulled out this old OOP Marcy Tilton pattern because it suggested the varsity jacket style with a twist. I look at a lot of patterns on ebay and etsy and this was what I ended up choosing. I cut a 12 which is down a size for me on the advice of PR, suggesting it runs plenty large.
I installed Giant snaps with lattice buttons for backings for visual balance (when reverse side shows) and support. This jacket has already passed the wearability test. No twisting, falling off of shoulders, collars swabbing across the lipstick, grabby sleeves, and there's the useful pockets...no wonder I'm smiling! |
