EDITED TO ADD A BETTER PHOTO
Pattern description:
"Men's pull-on pants and shorts have fly opening and elastic in casing at waist."
Pattern sizing:
Sizes S to XXL.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, pretty much.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes, exceptionally so. Kwik Sew instructions are really good.
These pants have a fly, which makes them slightly more complex than pyjama pants with just an elastic waist. I had not made this type of fly before and certainly needed the instructions.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
It's a straightforward, basic pattern for a simple garment, one that anyone with basic sewing skills could make.
Fabric used:
Cotton poplin from Hawaiian Fabric in purple with a green and purple turtle print. Just why I ever bought it I do not know. It has been in my stash for a few years, and it has been quite difficult to know what to do with it. Now, however, its time has come. Making pants with it is preferable to making a shirt for my younger brother because he has conservative taste in clothes.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
No alterations for sizing. As these pants are a Christmas gift, it remains to be seen whether they fit but I am confident they will. [They do fit, and very well.]
One design change: I added two buttons to the fly so that it would not gape when the wearer sits. I gleaned this tip from another review.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes to both. I hope to make more of these in future. Pyjama pants are useful and make great gifts, and as they are quick and easy sewing projects, they are a good way to use stash fabric.
Note that the seam allowance is a conventional 15mm (5/8in), not Kwik Sew's former, very narrow 6mm, which I never liked. I do not know whether this is a permanent change, something that McCalls has introduced since buying the company last year, but I am not complaining.
Conclusion:
An excellent and useful basic pattern. All photos can be seen here. |

I'll bet your brother loved these. :o) You're making me think I should make some for my husband, too. He wears sweats at night all the time, but I could make him some of these, and I bet he'd really like them in a nice, warm flannel.

I love your crazy fabric - PJ pants are the one garment where louder is better! If I make these for DH will he miraculously look like the pattern envelope model?
