There is a very detailed review and a pile of pictures on my blog: Girl's Burda Coat at Thimbles, Threads, and Needles

Pattern Description: Girl's Dress Coat. Pretty basic. I wanted a nice coat for DD to wear as she is one of those girls who wears dresses every day for everything. A parka or a ski coat just looks funny to me with her skirts sticking out underneath. I've been looking at coat patterns for ages, and I was so pleased when this new Burda popped up a couple of weeks ago.

Pattern Sizing: European sizing 116-140

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Oh, absolutely. Except that I color blocked mine and added a hood.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Typical Burda instructions. Which means they were fairly incomprehensible. I worked out the construction step-by-step, making relatively few errors along the way. Except the part where I sewed the sleeves in wrong and had to rip them out and redo them.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like the pockets most. They're real pockets, not just decorative pocket flaps. DD loves that part too. And the two-part sleeves makes this coat look so grown up and sophisticated. Setting the sleeves in was far easier than I anticipated -- that was the one part I was really anxious about and it turned out to be wasted angst :o) The notched collar is a nice shape, and the back pleat makes extra room for active kids.

I didn't like how hard it was to put in the lowest buttonhole, with the waist seam there and all, but that's my only gripe and I'm not sure there's a solution to that.

Fabric Used: Plain weave wool flannel in three different colors: rose, gray and plaid. Thank you, Miss Fairchild. The lining is a green poly that I bought at JoAnn's as stash lining fabric.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I didn't really alter the pattern at all, and it fits beautifully. I didn't make the collar in velvet as the pattern suggests and I added a hood from OOP New Look 6853. I bound all the seams with self-made quilting cotton binding.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Oh, yes, I will definitely sew this again. It fits so well that there's no room to grow, so she'll need another one next year. It's hard to make a coat like this that has growing room and still looks good, so I'm not complaining. Besides, it was a fun project and I'll be happy to do it again.

Conclusion: This is a very lovely coat and an excellent pattern. Everything matches up and the pieces all fit beautifully together. Well worth having to piece together the pattern and add all the seam allowances. Highly recommended for the more experienced seamstress. Inadequate instructions make it not so good for the uninitiated.

That is very cute! I like the pretty cotton you used inside to bind the seams like in the sleeves. Super adorable and it kind of pops. (Whenever one happens to look inside their coat anyway) your dd will always remember this coat and also the *real* pockets:)

What a beautiful coat, and clearly a labor of love. Your DD is a very lucky little girl. And I hesitated to say anything about the child because I was really caught off guard when I saw the photo-it could have been of me at that age. So of course, completely adorable.....
