Pattern Description:

Children's Bible costumes. Gown has 2 sleeve options and dropped shoulders. According to the pattern, a portion of the back seam is left open, the secured at the top with a hook.
The cardboard angel wings are supposed to be tied in place with the decorate rope that doubles as a belt.

I sewed the angel costume for my daughter who needed a snow angel costume for the school musical.

Pattern Sizing:

I chose the size 6-8 envelope for my 8 year old daughter. It was enormous! I had to sew a second costume because the first one was unwearable. I never thought to make a muslin for a loose-fitting child's costume, but I guess I should have. At least the fabric was cheap.
See my pattern alterations for details.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?

NO. It was much too wide. The shoulder seam was half way down my daughter's arm making it so she could hardly move her arms.
My second version (shown in the photo) does look like the illustration.

Were the instructions easy to follow?

Yes, the instructions were fine. It was a little strange seeing a sleeve pattern with absolutely no sleeve cap. The shape of the gown at the shoulder and surrounding areas gives the sleeve a little shape. I know the pattern is supposed to be dropped shoulder, but this was ridiculous.
I understood the directions, but I disagreed with the pattern in general--they were making it too simplified, losing some basic concepts along the way.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?

Like--had the big sleeves that my daughter wanted

Dislike-So incredibly wide I had to make a second costume, the amsceye

Fabric Used:

Cotton broadcloth.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:

On my first try I lined it--which was more trouble than it was worth--especially since the pattern didn't work anyway. The shoulders were way to long, making it look like she was wearing her dad's shirt. It restricted her arm movement and looked awful. I don't think I could get her to put it on again for a photo.

So, I folded out 2 inches from the width of the pattern on both the front and back gown pieces starting at mid-shoulder and going all the way to the hem. This made the front pieces 4 inches more narrow and the back piece 4 inches more narrow.

I added 1 inch to the length of the sleeve according to my daughter's arm measurement. Also shortened the gown my 2 inches to make it less likely to be tripped on.

The wings are made from posterboard with feathers glued on. I cut 2 holes per side so that I could thread elastic through, making arm straps. She puts the wings on like a backpack.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?

Now that I have the pattern fixed, I might sew it again. I do not recommend it to others unless they are willing to work with the pattern a bit. It's a simple pattern so it's easy to alter.

Conclusion:

Watch those shoulder seams! They are about 6 1/2 inches long
This was supposed to be a quick and easy project, but ended up being frustrating. The good news is that my daughter is very happy with this second version of the pattern.
