Pattern Description: 18"W x 7"L bags. lined, have contrast straps and patch sections. B has inside pocket. Measurements are approximate and exclude straps.
Pattern Sizing:When the bag is full it's much longer than 7" because it expands--downward.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? I think so.
Were the instructions easy to follow? fairly easy but confusing as to where the pieces would end up on the bag
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? My major dislike is that I found it difficult to envision where the pieces were going to go. Since it's a collage, I did not want to end up with a lot of the same colors or fabrics near each other. The diagram on the back and the direction sheet didn't help me much. Also, for such a large bag the zipper opening should be bigger. However, if the opening were bigger I would stuff more stuff into the bag which would have made it look more like a sack than the overnight bag it now looks like.
Fabric Used: upholstery fabric scraps I bought at an art fair. Most were 5"x7" samples. I didn't have big enough fabric pieces for many of the pattern pieces so I needed to stitch the scraps together to get a big enough yardage and then cut the pattern piece from it. This took more time than it actually took to sew the bag.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I did not use the sheer overlay pattern pieces because I didn't like how the sheers looked when I tried them. If I were able to find better sheers I would have used them. The sheers could alter the colors which could work in your favor. I didn't use some of the patches either because the upholstery fabric was thick and if I added more patches on some of the pieces the seams would have been too thick. As it was I had to use the "thingamajig" to get over some of the seams. I also did not use the pattern's suggestion for the patches around the strap openings. I bought some pleather at JoAnn's which was fun and easy to use so I just schmushed it around the openings. Maybe not as organized but it was fun.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I was encouraged by Shams' review. (thank you!) I might sew it again. I think it would make a beautiful gift. My recommendation to others would be not to take it so seriously and just grab some fabrics you like and start sewing and not worry about where they were going to end up. Conclusion: It's big. Too big for a purse, too big for a gym bag, too big and clumsy to take to classes but a great overnight bag or for taking clothes to the laundry.
