| Pattern Description: Misses Coat in 2 lengths with collar, sleeve and belt variations
Pattern Sizing: 14 - 22 - I made a 16/18
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes with variations
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? Classic styling with options to "customize" it
Fabric Used: A loosely woven wool coating blend in houndstooth, the blend was unidentified but seemed to have a lot of cotton
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: Added a fur collar and cuffs, extra button, bound buttonholes, no center back seam, shortened length to above knee
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? YES! This is my personal "Best Pattern of 2012" !!
Conclusion: I made a coat 2 winters ago that I disliked so much I gave it to Goodwill - something about it was just too frumpy. When I saw this pattern I knew what the problem was - the previous coat was too long and had no shape. This pattern, with the front princess seam and belt options, gives the coat some shape but it is still roomy enough to get a suit jacket on underneath. I made the belt version that attaches to the side fronts. Back view
I chose a fabric that was very hard to work with (one of those "it MUST be this fabric or nothing!" poor decisions). It was extremely thick and on top of that a loose weave, so I had to interface every inch of it, making it even heavier and thicker. But the pattern itself was a dream! Everything fit together perfectly, even after I made the adjustments for the faux Persian lamb collar inserted into the front facing pieces. Close-up of collar The collar went together the easiest of any notched collar I have ever done.
I added a pleat in the back lining for ease. I also cut the back piece below the yoke as a single piece because I would've had a nervous breakdown trying to match the houndstooth pattern both horizontally and vertically with a curved seam! Due to the nature of the fabric, I had to make bound buttonholes - I knew there was no way that loose weave would work with machine-stitched buttonholes. I used a scrap of black oxford cloth for the buttonholes to cut down on the bulk. Truthfully, the buttonholes were probably the most time consuming part of the whole coat! Close-up of bound buttonholes
Since I was making a coat I hope will last more than one season, I went all in and made my own shoulder pads (actually very easy for the great result) and chose a lining that looks as good as the outside - my favorite color. Lining
I finished the coat earlier this month but have only worn it a few times since it hasn't been that cold. However, the first time I wore it to work one of my co-workers loved it so much she keeps asking me if I keep it locked up. LOL! Check out these spectacular gloves she gave me - I think they may have been a bribe! Matching gloves
In conclusion: BEST. COAT. PATTERN. EVER. | Buy this pattern for $16.95 Add to Bag |
