Pattern Description:
Shirts with collar and collar band, front band, pockets and sleeve variations; shirt A has short sleeves; shirts B, C, D, E have long sleeves with cuffs; shirt B has contrast inside collar band and cuffs.
Pattern Sizing:
Small-Large
I made a medium.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes, no problems undestanding any of it.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I liked that this pattern was a basic buttondown shirt. The only thing I didn't care for was that it did not include details that ready-to-wear clothes have.
Fabric Used:
I made three different shirts, so one was an Italian Cotton Shirting (60" wide) from Fabric Mart. The other two were also shirting from Fabric Mart but 45" wide. (Purchased about 2 years ago.)
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I added a yoke on the back of the shoulders. This is something you see on a lot of ready-to-wear shirts. I also had to take 2" off the hem and 1 1/4" off the sleeves. I added topstitching to the shoulder seams and around the armholes. (Another ready-to-wear touch.)
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Definitely. Now that I have the pattern sizing correct, I can whip up a buttondown shirt in a day!
Conclusion:
In the future I would like to figure out how to make a placket on the sleeves. There is an opening on the sleeves right now and it has a very "handmade" finish.

I like seeing reviews for men's shirts as I make some sport shirts for my DH - he loves them all but I am not always so pleased with the outcome as getting the size right is difficult . Check out Louise Cutting's instructions for doing a placket - also Sandra Betzina and Ron Collins have excellent step by step instructions 1/23/13 12:18 PM
