Pattern Sizing:
XXS-L (hip 88-112cm) I made the Large since I was between Medium & Large, and they feel fine, but looking at the photos, I think they're too big through the hip and thigh so I'll size down next time.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes! They look exactly like the tech drawing, and very similar to the photo, though I did not use a contrast yoke for this pair.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Papercut patterns come with full, illustrated instructions, which are really very good IMHO. One change to the pattern format from the previous collection is that the instructions are printed on the same brown paper as the pattern pieces, but given dotted lines and instructions to assemble these into a little booklet (Booklet photo). I actually enjoyed this, and it felt like a little craft project before the craft project! I strongly suggest you do cut out and assemble the little booklet, though, because the instructions are very good, and it means they're a lot easier to refer to while you're sewing.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I absolutely adore the seam lines on this pattern! I love that it's got mid-leg seaming in the front and back, and I just love all the angles that the yoke and pocket pieces make at the hip. (Photos)
They've also got a very unique hem, which is unusual in trouser patterns. The hem dips low and curved in the back, and sweeps up to an inverted V at the centre front (Hem photos). It's a nice and unique feature, but it does require some concentration to select shoes to wear with them, as they definitely look their best with heels, and not ankle boots or flats!
The waistband is a basic rectangle, though, and something I've never really liked in other patterns, either - I find that the top of the waistband likes to stand away from my body and not fit as snugly as a curved waistband piece (with a separate facing). I personally would substitute in a curved waistband off another pattern for my next version, but if straight waistbands aren't something that bother you, there's nothing to be worried about with this one.
Because of the extra yoke seaming at the waist, the side pockets are placed a little lower here than in most trouser patterns, but I didn't find this to be an issue.
Fabric Used:
I sewed these in some dark brown stretch twill that I'd bought in Paris last Spring, though it's not the easiest fabric to see seamlines in! I've lightened these photos as best I can without them looking overly washed-out. I didn't have any particular attachment to this fabric, but it was in my stash and was a stretch woven as per the pattern requirements, so I made these as a trial version (or wearable muslin if you prefer). I might fancy making these again in some stretch wool suiting in my stash from last winter...
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I didn't make any changes here, design or otherwise! In future I'll swap out the waistband for curved pieces, and depending on the time of year I'll be wearing them, I may opt for a straight hem instead (easier to wear winter boots with a straight hem!).
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes I'll definitely sew these again, and I'd recommend it to others, too. There are so many basic, boring trouser patterns that I get super excited when I see an interesting one!
This is the second great trouser pattern Papercut have produced in their brief existence thus far, so they're certainly a company to watch in future, too!
