| Pattern Description:
Girls' dress with sleeve variations
Pattern Sizing:
2-3-4-5
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, but only because I measured the pattern pieces, read reviews and modified the pattern accordingly.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
These are good instructions for the areas that might throw a beginner. I had to look over the sleeve/neck band seam instructions and they are clear enough.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I like the over-the-elbow sleeves and the very gathered skirt. It's a pretty dress and not too babyish for a little bit bigger girl. DD likes the neckline and roses best. Dislikes... this is one poorly drafted pattern. As other reviews have stated, the bodice and sleeves are drafted incorrectly. On both sleeve and bodice, the actually length of the pattern piece increases only about 1/8" per size up, resulting in sleeves that are *not* over-the-elbow and an empire bodice in the larger sizes. Not an impossible issue, but annoying and certain to disappoint new sewists.
Fabric Used:
Pinwale corduroy in "sangria"; the bodice is lined in a scrap of black casa satin.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I lengthened the bodice by 2 3/4" to make it hit at the waist as the pattern photo shows. I added 3" to the sleeve length. This dress has plenty of ease, so I sewed a 4 for my thin 6 yo with length added through out, cutting the skirt length at a 5 and adding an inch to the hem.
I omitted the skirt lining and tulle ruffling.
I used a lapped zipper application.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
No, this is not one I'm going to do again. DD likes it very much and the roses are cute and easy, but there is quite a bit of hand work (sleeve bands, lining over waistline seam, and neckband facing over neckband seam) and I think one is enough. The pattern is OOP for good reason.
Conclusion:
Don't cut a larger size without measuring your child first. If you want the pictured waist location and sleeve length, you will need to make adjustments. Don't skip the roses - they're quick and easy and they add a lot to the dress. And make sure you have a bit of extra time for the handwork - this won't be a one hour dress.

I couldn't get the pic to come up larger but looks cute. I was curious about this as I have this same pattern for DD but haven't made it up yet. Thanks for the detailed review.

This is cute! Love those full sleeves, very Anne of Green Gables.

Beautiful dress - and great detailed review. The roses are a definite plus! I love that you made it in the pinwale corduroy. I have some to use for my daughter and wondered how it would look in a dress.
