Pattern Description:
My first review is for the Bloom Dress from Patty Young's book Sewing ModKid Style: Modern Threads for the Cool Girl. I have two young girls, ages 5 and 7, and purchased this book to make them clothing. Their tastes very much match the style of this book, liking expensive clothes from Hanna Andersson especially. I made the Bloom Dress and coordinating leggings from the book so far.
Pictured is the coordinating dresses I made them for Valentine's Day.
Pattern Sizing:
2T-10 multisized patterns on nice, thick paper. Thumbs up on the heavy duty paper. The darn cat even jumped on one when I was sewing and it was no worse for wear.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Mostly, although the neck band turned out wonky due to my inexperience. I made 3 of these dresses in total so far and all had this problem. (any tips would be much appreciated)
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes, very. The book and designs inspired me to try as a beginner and I often lack confidence to try.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Each step had a small sketch that helped explain things to me. Super helpful. Also, the pattern wasn't too wordy, so I didn't get overwhelmed.
Fabric Used:
Red and white printed cotton heart jersey from gorgeousfabrics.com,
Organic fuschia cotton interlock from fabric.com. Both beautiful fabrics to work with. I could have a 100 yards of the interlock in many colors and never get tired of it. It is so perfect, plush, squishy, comfy, not too thick, not too thin, does not roll.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
Kind of but the patterns are highly customizable. More pics visible in the photostream to see all the changes. (I am very much a beginner so please be gentle.)
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Absolutely, the girls have asked me to make more dresses and leggings.
My older daughter has asked for many pairs of the leggings because they are "so comfortable, it's like wearing nothing.... but warmer."
Conclusion:
Highly recommend if you have girly-girls that like fun, comfy clothes.

Very nice dresses. Making things for appreciative children is very rewarding. Also like that you are sewing for your children in natural fibres too.

Interlock tends to grow, in my experience, so it might benefit from being a little shorter in length and stretched a little harder. You might want to look at this video for making the neckline fit better. http://www.threadsmagazine.com/item/3839/video-a-neckline-binding-for-knits I think the dresses turned out very nicely, overall.

Cute dresses! Yes, from your description it just seems the binding needs to be shortened, which I'm working on mastering myself. Unfortunately it's different for different knits.
