Early last fall, I saw this dress in a magazine and wanted to recreate it. I couldn't find a color block pattern that worked exactly but when Vogue released this Sandra Betzina pattern, I suspected I could make it work with some alterations.
Pattern Description: Very loose-fitting, pullover dress has neckband, seam detail, side slits and hem band. A: armhole bands.
Pattern Sizing: Sizing A through J is based on measurements. I started with size B based on my measurements but it was too large so I scaled back to a little smaller than Size A. I realize now that the description is "loose-fitting" and I was going for a fitted look so it makes sense that I needed to scale down.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? No but that was because I intentionally changed it.
Were the instructions easy to follow?I only used at the directions for finishing the neckline and have to admit I was a little confused. But once the light bulb went on, I realized the directions and illustration were actually very clear. I just hadn't finished a v-neck like that before.
A quick glance at the directions indicate a lot of tips as usually found in Sandra Betzina's patterns.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? Well, I guess I liked that it allowed me to recreate the look I wanted. LOL
Fabric Used: Fabric suggested: For Single Knit with Body: Double Knits, Stretch Wovens with Good Crosswise Stretch. Also for Contrast 2 B: Stretch Mesh.
I used three ponte knits in cream, taupe and black.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I recreated all the pattern pieces so I would have three distinct blocks on top and bottom. I omitted the hem band. I only had to add 2" to the length (I'm 5' 3.5" for reference) and did a 2" hem that hits just above the knee.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I don't need another one like this but would definitely recommend to others.
Conclusion: I'm very happy with my knockoff and plan to wear it to present at a conference in a few weeks.

Answers to questions:
Where did you get the ponte knits from? I have purchased ponte knits from Hancock Fabrics and FabricMart and have been very pleased with the quality.
Wow what a great interpretation. You look fab. Are you not entering it in the rtw knockoff competition? Thanks so much! I'm on the contest committee so ineligible to enter.
Does it need a zipper under the arm? I did not include a zipper and have no problem getting it own. I suppose if you used an extremely stable knit, you might need one but the ponte knits had enough give. |

Did you have to put a zipper under the arm to get in? I have the fabric and pattern but don't want it "very loose fitting".
