I'm teaching myself pattern drafting. This dress was made to try out 3 ideas I've seen in books. Two were from Adele Margolis: the Corner Pleat Sleeves and the Pegged Skirt. The Bodice is based on instructions in Pattern Magic 2 from the chapter entitled Different Facings, Different Looks.

All three ideas have been blogged as tutorials:

Corner Pleat Sleeves

Pegged (or Tulip) Skirt

Bodice

I used my own block as a starting point for each draft so all adjustment resulted in a good fit.

None of the three elements were particularly difficult to draft though I wouldn't consider them as ideal first projects. If you're new to drafting, I'd recommend you start with the Basic Skirt Block (Sloper) and as the first foray into slash and spread Basic to A-line

The method of drafting a sleeve with pleated corners is much recommended for those fed up of setting in sleeves. The back and the front are symmetrical and there is no ease. Provided you start off with correct armhole and sleeve measurements, it'll work a treat.

Fabric Used: I dyed some calico (which doesn't appear in the list of fabrics used so let me know if it's called something else in the U.S. It's basically the muslin fabric) The colour is flattering and disguises the fabric's humble origins.

I love the way the three elements have combined into a pattern that's flattering and exaggerates the best in my figure whilst detracting from the worst. It's not a perfect make but getting there and I love how putting it on boosts my mood. I'm gonna wear it all spring!

Awesome notes and links. I am learning pattern drafting too, and I hope to try these techniques. Great dress.

Really lovely! It looks great on you and I love the several pleat details. Thanks for all the explaining.
