Pattern Description:
This shirtmaker dress has 4 views. A has short sleeves with sleeve tabs. View B has no sleeves and a curved hem. View C has no sleeves and a straight hemline. View D has long sleeves with cuff. You can make a belt and also add welts for fake front pocket.
All views have princess seams on the front bodice from the sleeve and an inverted pleat at the back of the bodice. Pattern Sizing:
6 - 16 Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes it did. The picture image shows the billowing above the waist line at the front so I've tapered this in from the waist to the bustline. Were the instructions easy to follow?
Now I had to read the instructions for their collar instructions and back pleat instructions. And these were the only two times I used the instructions. They were easy to follow.
I sewed up the collar to the collar band first. Then I sewed the collar to the rightside first. And topstitched the back collar band to finish.
The collar band has green tape on the inside, like some shirts have. You can see the detailing better here. What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
The big minus is the below waist belt carriers and skirt join. I'll change this next time.
The other issue is the princess seam at the front is to the side of the bust. That confounded me so I've since taken some fullness out at the bust point - just a smidge.
The big pluses are the sleeve variations.
I do like the front skirt closure feature.
If you don't feel comfortable making pockets, this pattern only has the pocket welts with no pocket bag. Fabric Used:
Cotton with an overall rose print. I've added green tape to the inside collar band. Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I made the back skirt wider so I can easily walk.
I also used a 3/4 sleeve with small cuffs.
I added epaulets on the shoulders to make this more military style.
I took our some volume below the bust to the waist after finishing the dress.
The next version will have less bust room although that will be tricky because of the back pleat. There's only so much front bodice fitting I can do before it affects the back bodice fit. Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Well...yes. If you don't already have a shirtmaker dress pattern in your pattern stash, try this one if you bought it ages ago. Conclusion:
I tried to make this dress more military to contrast the rose print on the fabric. I do like this dress and I can tweak it a bit more when I make it up again. I bought some 'vintage' fabrics and one is being cut out now for another shirtmaker dress.
Really like this and toughening it up! The back pleat looks like it would be comfortable.
