schmammy, Whet I do is figure out how much elastic to use by pulling a piece around my waist til comfortable and add a lap over. On this pair, I quarter-marked elastic and pants. I made the elastic a circle. Then I serge the elastic edge (lifting the cutter away), matching the 4 quarter marks. Then I fold it over and stretch and top-stitch. Hope this helps.
