|Pattern Description: "Ideal for every day wear, this modern take on culottes combines the practicality of shorts with the cuteness of a circle skirt. Pattern features a fitted waistband, wonderful drape, invisible side seam zipper and hidden centre front and back pleats to create the illusion of a skirt. Comes in short length, and is easily adapted to longer hems"|
I made this for my niece's 16th birthday, but then decided I want one as well.
Pattern Sizing: XS to XL. I cut an XS for my niece and a S for me. Hers is a bit big at the natural waistline, so she wears it slightly below.
Were the instructions easy to follow? This was my first time working with a Megan Nielsen pattern, and I was really impressed with the quality of the pattern paper, the clever packaging, as well as the instruction booklet. The instructions are very clear, and I especially like the suggested variations to the pattern.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? The design is very clever - shorts that look exactly like a skirt. I wear shorts all summer, so it's nice to look ladylike once in a while. This is an extremely easy pattern to put together. The bias parts of the hem do stretch out quite a bit, so be sure the let the shorts hang before hemming.
Fabric Used: Version 1 is a red and white floral rayon challis from Fabric.com. Version 2 is a black and yellow patterned rayon challis from Sewfisticated fabric store nearby. Note: I forgot about pattern matching, so the front of the Version 2 is a little wonky, but it's not too noticeable.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: No alterations at all to the red/white version. I only added an additional 2" to the length of the black/yellow version. For future makes, I will sew an XS at the waist and grade to a size S at the hips. I didn't grade initially because I thought I could wear the culottes a bit below my natural waistline. I realize now that I like the fit at the waistline for this type clothing.
Here is a collage of the culottes with views of the side and back.
