|I entered a Great Gatsby inspired competition held by a local fabric store. We had around two months to create our entries and then they were judged on the night by two guest judges, one who worked on costuming in the real Great Gatsby movie!!!!!! I made the dress which is a straight underdress with a gathered skirt overdress and the hat.|
My first attempt was using a Burdaystyle pattern which was a 1920's style dress cut on the bias with a cowl neck. It really was not flattering on me. I played around with it for a while but it just wasn't doing it for me and wasn't a winner.
I googled so many 20s images it's hard to remember exactly where my inspiration came from but I really liked this style of dress and I knew it would suit me.
I made Colette's Sorbetto to get a feel for a loose fitting top and then I basically reworked everything from there. I made a long dress version which actually ended up being quite different from sorbetto but still based on the basic shape. I cut the overdress top similarly but cut it down the middle and then attached a gathered double skirt so that it layered in two colours. I liked the way the colours blended in together and gave the skirt colour some depth.
I attached the beaded motifs on either side, the sash to tie it all together and the pearls are my own - some real, some not. The little flowers on the front came from the store - in fact almost everything came from the store - that was one of the rules.
I then made the hat from a pattern I got from etsy. It was easy to sew and looks quite cute but I hadn't taken into account that when I made a faux bob, my hair was going to take up room and as a result, it was a little uncomfortable to wear this hat. The decoration on the hat is the same fabric as the overdress.
Here is another view of the outfit.
I thoroughly enjoyed making this outfit. I read the book, saw the movie, read everything I could get my hands on about 20s fashion and viewed countless images of dresses, hair, makeup - you name it!
And guess what - my entry made first place! I won a voucher to spend in the store which is the best prize anyone could have given to me!
