| (I tested the pattern for the Sewaholic Saltspring Dress and sewed 2 versions, chiffon and jersey. This is the review of the jersey version.)|
Pattern Description: The Saltspring Dress is a sundress in two lengths, a full-length maxi dress and an above-knee length dress. The bodice lining is cut shorter than the bodice pieces, which gives a blousing at the waistline. The straps tie in a bow at the shoulders and it has inseam pockets.
Pattern Sizing: Sizes 0-16, Sizing is proportioned for a pear-shaped figure: smaller bust and waist, larger hips, but this dress shape is suited to different figures.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, exactly
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes. I find that the Sewholic instructions are excellent, and always include a clear diagram for each step.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? There was nothing I disliked about the pattern. I like the flattering shape of the dress, that it can be sewn in two lengths and that the pattern instructions are very well written, though maybe a beginner would need more detail.
Fabric Used: For this version I used Liberty of London striped cotton jersey and ribbons from Jane Means for the straps.
Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made: Even though I was Pattern Testing the Saltspring Dress, I made some changes to this jersey dress because it was the second version I sewed. It is sewn without a zipper, which meant I was able to cut the back bodice lining piece on a fold. Seams were added to the front bodice and front skirt pattern pieces, as I wanted to make chevrons with the striped jersey. Also I didn't use the strap pattern pieces, because I found ribbons which perfectly matched the fabric, so used these instead for straps.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes I would sew it again. I have seen it sewn in voile, which I would love to try, and I would love to sew it in a very 'drapey' jersey. I would highly recommend the pattern to others.
Conclusion: A very versatile pattern for a summer dress which can be sewn as a casual dress or an occasion dress depending on the fabrics you choose.
