|Pattern Description: |
Skiny brand underwear. My BF is a perfect off the rack type, as if the clothes were tailored for him, but I still like to make him things myself.
I cut up his favorite underwear that had holes in them (don't tell him ;)) and copied a pattern off it by laying painters plastic over the parts and marking with a sharpie. I made sure to iron the cut pieces flat first and then added seam allowances to my pattern after tracing around it.
My pattern pieces
In the end, I ended up making 3 pairs out of .5 meter fabric.
Copied from Skiny brand, Size L
Did it look like the original once you were done sewing with it?
5% Lycra, 55% Cotton, 40% Viscose
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
- I added an exposed elastic waistband instead of the covered one from the original.
- Since I don't have a coverstitch, I serged the edges together, and then zigzagged to make flat edges inside. The topstitching was done in a blue to match the stripes in the elastic. I really liked how that turned out!
Costs: 8.5€ for three pair
Elastic: 2 meter = 4€
Cotton/Lycra: .5 meter = 4,5€
Time: Bought the fabric and sewed up same evening.
Pair 1 - Approx. 2 hours including tracing pattern, changing serger thread, and sewing.
Pair 2 & 3 - Approx an hour for cutting out and sewing. OK, actually it was 1.5 for #2, but I'm not counting the half an hour where I had to rip out two serged seams after I sewed the front pouch upside down. d'oh!
Would you sew it again?
If I can find some more fashion elastic like the ones I did today I would be willing to do this again. With all the parts, I save a little, since these underwear cost about 6-7€ when they are on a sale.
Super cute and they're specially made for him! I sent him a text saying there was some sexy underwear waiting for him when he gets home. He'll be surprised when he learns it's for him :-D
