Sewing for Toddlers has easy-to-follow sewing instructions with clear illustrations, time saving techniques and the most up-to-date sewing methods. All styles and creative ideas are shown throughout the book in full colour photographs.
A master pattern is included to create entire wardrobes for girls and boys such as: T-shirts, sweatshirts, pants, shorts, jumpsuits, dresses, skirts and over 40 variations. Some of the pattern pieces included on the master pattern are interchangeable so you can make many variations of the garments Also included are appliqués, tips and ideas to add a personal touch.
The master pattern includes sizes T1 to T4. Toddler sizing assumes that the toddler is wearing diapers.
Were the instructions easy to follow? This book is great for learning some introductory techniques for sewing for toddlers such as pants with only a inner-leg seam, elastic, knits, color blocking.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? After using this book and the master patterns a few times, I'm afraid to say that I might be done with Kwik Sew because of the sizing issue. I cut a 2T for my youngest and they were so huge. Probably twice as big as they needed to be. Picture! So I spent a lot of time seam-ripping and re-sizing for what I thought should have been a one or two day quick project.
Fabric Used: Spandex and swimsuit lining from Spandex House
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: Lots! I added a lining copied off a pair of undies and added some contrasting stripes of black spandex along the side seams to break up the print a little bit. I also made some cute little tags and added a matching patch on store-bought SPF shirts, pic here.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Well. Having the basic master patterns is nice but I am frustrated by how big the patterns run. For a pair of "comfy" pants for my 4 year old, I cut the length of 4T and the crotch / waist of 2T. They were too long and slipped off his waist. It seems like I spend a lot of time altering what should be pretty basic pieces.
The suits have held up through the lake, the pool, the sprinklers, and the beach! I love hearing, "look at the matching suits!" If I make them again next season, I will probably search for a shorts pattern that has good comments regarding sizing.
