Tote Bag, view A
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, I thought so
Were the instructions easy to follow?
I got a little confused when I was reading how they wanted the zipper panel installed, so I pinned it first before sewing to make sure it would look right when I was done. I'm a new sewer, I like to double check a lot before I do anything "permanently"
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I like the size of the bag
I didn't like how the straps turned out - They seemed very flimsy just using the fabric on its own. The bag is floppy in general, I didn't use any interfacing or stabilizer
I didn't like that it was unlined, so I added one.
Cotton fabric I bought from Walmart - a solid teal for the straps and the lining I added, a flowered print for the outside pocket, and the polka dot for the large outside panels.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I cut the outside pocket pieces out on the fold so that it would be lined on the pockets, and I added a lining to the inside.
For the lining I cut an extra set of the large panels and constructed it the same way as the outside. When I added it in I left the opening to turn it on the top edge, because once I added the zipper panel I top stitched around everything so it was closed up and hidden and now there are no raw edges on my bag . That part was a little tricky because I wanted to make sure to line things up and not get the fabric twisted or uneven.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes, but I would use a heavier weight fabric for the outside or some interfacing to give it some structure.
I like the pattern, I bought them to use a lot of small scraps and fat quarters of fabric I inherited from a friends grandmother who quilted. I hope to make it through all the different bags listed on the pattern, I think they would be great gift bags.
