|Pattern Description: |
Misses' dress with bodice, collar and sleeve variations. Project Runway collection sewing patterns.
I used only the bodice and collar for this dress. The skirt is cut from Simplicity 2401.
I started with a size 6 bodice, minus the waistband, and made very minor adjustments to suit my figure.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Somewhat, but only because of my changes.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes, for my purposes. I didn't really use all of the instructions, and tend to do things my own way.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I love the fit. The gathers in the back are just enough without adding too much fluff. The collar and collar band are the perfect size. I love the princess seams, which is what made me choose this pattern.
Medium weight linen. I used cotton muslin to interface the placket, the collar, collar stand, and to underline the skirt.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I changed the skirt to an A-line shape and eliminated the waistband. I added pocket flaps at the front bodice and used more buttons than the pattern calls for.
I embellished the collar with embroidery using Palestrina stitch and size 3 ecru perle cotton.
I made Dorset buttons using size 5 ecru perle cotton (a new technique to me), and added embroidery and buttons to the pocket flaps.
At the shoulder seams, I added bra carriers--great for sleeveless garments.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
YES! I have always wanted to make a shirt dress, and I feel this one incorporates all my preferred customizations. I've made a different view from this pattern before, and was also very pleased. I'm sure I'll return to this pattern again because both times it gave me great results.
Thanks to the LWD contest, I now have a comfortable, versatile dress! Wearing all white is definitely outside my comfort zone, but boy am I glad I stepped out!
