I first started going to this large Hancock store on the southwest side of Houston back in the 70's. I lived about 5 minutes from there, and it sure was convenient!
Fast forward to 2009. As locals know, Houston has no zoning, and this end of down has deteriorated considerably. When I lived there it was a good middle-class neighborhood. It is now a place typical of the rot that neighborhoods can take in a city, where most of the businesses have iron bars on their windows. It can be rather creepy just driving to the location.
I went there a couple of weeks ago as I was driving through that end of town. This is a large freestanding store and it still has a very large selection of fabric, though not necessarily well organized. I had to traipse all over the store because fabrics were not logically grouped. There was a 5-for-5 sale on McCalls patterns so I had the opportunity to leaf through the catalogues.
Biggest problem here? Staffing. There were apparently only two employees on the busy Saturday when I visited and a really long line for fabric cutting, and a longer one to check out. I had a few fabrics I wanted, and I finally just gave up on that. I stood for 15+ minutes waiting to check out my patterns and a couple of notions. This is unacceptable.
It saddens me to see my old neighborhood in southwest Houston gone so far downhill; there is a Hancock on the other side of town that I frequent much more often. There are so few general fabric stores left in Houston, and those who live around here know what an expedition it can be in Houston just to get from one part of town to another. Oh, we have lots of little quilting stores, but general fabric stores? Disappearing like the dodo.
