My favorite fabric shop. A beautiful selection of cottons, linens, silks, and rayons. Of particular note is their woolens of all colors, weights and styles. I was looking for a summer-weight wool in a bright color and found a lovely lavender, light-as-a-feather wool from Italy for $22 a yard. I live in G Street Land (Rockville, MD), and can tell you that this is an excellent price.
The staff is knowledgeable about their stock and the qualities of every fabric on every bolt. I asked for something drapey for a dress and the woman who helped me (I keep forgetting her name, but will definitely remember it next time!) brought out a fabulous linen/cotton blend that I snapped up. The rayons I looked at went for a mere $7 a yard--quite nice.
There is a separate room full of sequined and other fancy fabrics, lace and bridal items; a veritable wool warehouse, plus a smaller room packed with hard-to-find designer items. In another room are notions, ribbons and the most unique button collection I've ever seen. I'd drive all the way up there for the buttons alone!
This is a store that serves people who sew quality clothing. There aren't a lot of quilting cottons and I don't recall seeing any of the dreaded fleece. Their shirtings are of fine weight and crispness. The linen selection is particularly nice, with good dress-weight fabrics for around $18 a yard--far less than the same material at other shops I've been to in my area.
I can't always get to Baltimore to shop for fabric, but whenever possible I make the drive because I know I'll find something special and get ideas for future projects. I do not have a fabric stash since my sewing area is extremely small (a 4-square-foot corner of my bedroom), so I save up a couple of patterns and go to A Fabric Place when I'm ready to begin something new. It is a wonderful, independently owned shop.

Tee Jones Actie said... I've been shopping at this store since 1977!!! It's still by far the best place for reasonably priced high quality fabric. I send all of my prom and bridal customers there for the best and unique selection of fine fashion fabrics. Michael, the owner, is fabulous. The entire staff is very helpful and really know and care about sewing/fashion. Stop by if you're ever in the area, you won't be disappointed!!!! 2/20/13 7:24 AM
