During a recent trip to Oahu, I wanted to stop by a local fabric store for souvenirs. Also, I coveted the beautiful pareos I saw on the beach and at a luau and decided to buy fabric for an impromptu beach cover-up. So I talked DH into visiting Fabric Mart in Honolulu with me, and he actually enjoyed it.
Have you bought anything from this store? If yes were the prices competitive? Yes, I purchased three pieces of rayon fabric, one of which I tied sarong-like over my bathing suit to wear to the beach pareo.
The prices for traditional Hawaiian rayon prints were excellent. Most were $3.99/yard. There were some higher-quality rayons for $6.99/yard.
The store also carries a nice selection of silk charmeuse and chiffon for $9.99/yard, as well as a higher-quality ombre print silk charmeuse, and beautifully-printed silk charmeuse for $29.99/yard.
In addition, the store carries a large selection of special-occasion and bridal fabrics and laces in synthetic fibers. The prices and selection are great.
I'm sure they also have quilting cottons, but I didn't pay attention to them.
Were the sales people polite and friendly? I had a delightful time with Chan, a very attentive and helpful sales associate. He cut the edge of my pareo fabric nice and straight so I could wear it right away (unfortunately, they didn't have pinking shears). He told me I was skinnier than the girls in Hawaii, so I just needed two yards. Gotta love the flattery!
The lovely Venus was at the cash register, and I had to take a picture of her fabulous pineapple apron.
How would you rate the quality of the item this store sells? They have a range of higher-quality more expensive to lower-quality less expensive items. I would say most of the fabric is lower-priced to mid-priced.
How was your shopping experience. Is there anything you did not like about this store? I thoroughly enjoyed my experience there, found myself laughing the entire time. It really added to my vacation.
Would you shop here again? I certainly will stop by again when I'm in Hawaii. In fact, I wish I had a store like that nearby.
Would you recommend this store to others? Yes, by all means, go when you're in Honolulu.
Any other comments you would like to add? Another thing carried at the store that I liked was hand-appliqued-and-quilted small items like totes, and pillow shams, and makeup bags with traditional Hawaiian quilt motifs. They are made in the Philippines, but still nicely-done, and I did buy a small jewelry pouch with a turtle motif.
Another thing I wanted to add is that the store has its own parking lot, unusual in Honolulu. We snagged a pay spot right before we got to the store, and thought we were really lucky to get it - and then saw the lot next to the store.
