There hasn't been a review of B&J for a couple of years so I figured I'd post this one as an update--which is to say, the previous rave reviews still apply. As other review have noted, the store is beautifully stocked, and the arrangement is great, with samples hanging by fabric type, and it's very well lit.
But the real reason I'm posting is because of the staff at B&J, who may possibly be the most helpful fabric store staff in the City, made more remarkable by the fact that there were so many of them, I never had to go searching for someone to help me. They pulled bolt after bolt for me, directed me from section to section without hesitation, looked for other colorways for fabrics I wanted, held my heavy jacket and bag behind the desk for me while I looked, and were generally unbelievably helpful. As a result,I bought approximately 4 times the fabric I'd planned to purchase, and they'll be my first stop in Manhattan next time I go back. It did get more crowded as the afternoon wore on--go early if you can.
They had well-priced fabric, not just high-end, but be forewarned, the top-end fabrics are so gorgeous, you may give up and just go for it! I had previously ordered samples of boiled wools from them, and they were beautiful, but was able to stop in on a trip I made at short notice. Although I went in planning to buy at the low end, instead, yep, I bought THE most expensive fabric in the group. The joys of being able to fondle before you buy....
