Have you bought anything from this store? If yes were the prices competitive? I have bought many pieces from this store, which sells all fabrics, not just silks and woolens. There's also a home dec store that I've never ventured into. The prices are quite competitive with other stores that sell fine apparel fabric. There are reductions on select fabrics, and remnant pieces to buy, but this isn't a place to bargain hunt. The best way to get reductions is to haggle a little. Once they see you're serious about buying, the staff starts discounting your purchase at the measuring table.
Were the sales people polite and friendly? Yes, they are, and most people speak more than one language. So almost anyone can go there and get service in her native tongue, whatever it is! Mostly they bring a professionalism that is missing at other stores. Other stores' clerks want you to know they're "designers." This store's employees are dealers and purveyors of fine fabric.
How would you rate the quality of the item this store sells? This store deals in fine fabric. There are lower-priced cottons and polyester wovens and knits — the type you find almost anywhere. But the bulk of the store is fine woolens, silks, and laces. Interspersed among them are bolts or reels of vintage, dead stock pieces that are as old as the 1960s. This is especially true on the upstairs level, which contains thousands of reels of silk prints, many of which are vintage. So you can find fabric no one else is using and have a garment be truly unique. I have several vintage pieces from there and (sorry) I got the last of whatever there was on the bolt.
How was your shopping experience. Is there anything you did not like about this store? It's not "modern" or anything, but there is a parking lot just for the store (yay, no paid street parking). One block away is Kings Road Cafe for your spouse to sit and have a coffee and read a magazine from the newsstand.
Would you shop here again? Absolutely. I prefer this store to wading through the shops of downtown LA. It's also open on Sundays (unlike Mood), and they don't close on a whim on holidays like New Year's Eve, or close for half the day on a Saturday (unlike Mood).
Would you recommend this store to others? I have, and I do!
Any other comments you would like to add? The newly-relocated Mood is more convenient than it used to be to International Silks and Woolens, so you can reasonably make a day of it. Truthfully, I prefer this place.
