These two classes are run by the owner of a indie fabric boutique, Darrell Thomas Textiles, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He also offers Basic shirt, dress and some Home Dec classes as well. The classes are a total of 9 hours long assuming you stay for all three evenings of 3 hours each.

The classes are small (6 people) so there is lots of individual attention and interaction. The first day is the fitting of a prepared muslin of your garment. Darrell makes the changes to the muslin and explains each change as he goes for the benefit of all participants. All students use the same pattern for each garment. Day 2 is the sewing of the garment. He constructs the skirt/pant in front of the class and details each move out, so this is excellent for those who have not sewn before. After this stage, students may start to sew in the classroom or go home and sew on their own. Day 3 is final sewing and discussion of any design changes and how to do them. Muslins of other garments may be fitted at this point as well.

The knowledge level of the students I am with varies from one extreme to the other, but all of us are treated with the same respect and courtesy. The instructor is amazingly knowledgable and has a wodnerful sense of humour and style. This has the sew along feel rather than a lesson, but there is lots of learning going on! A very comfy environment to learn in.

After course support is offered. SHould you have any questions after the course is over, students are welcommed back for private help and phone calls are always encouraged. This is a store owner/instructor that really wants to encourage and empower the home sewer. Another bonus is that all supplies needed are available on site so that you can get really personal service in your selection of fabrics.

I am taking the skirt and pant classes at this moment and may take the shirt one next year when finances permit. Great courses for those who are new to sewing or who just want to sew with some other people on a like project.
