Deepika's pressing article made me think of one item I used for long seams... A towel.
To keep the seam allowances from showing when pressing open long seams (like on pant legs or sideseams), you can use a tightly rolled up towel. Tie the ends with some fabric scraps and you've got a seam pressing roll (I'm not sure what this tool is called, but it sure works well). Another good seam press would be a long dowel, cut or sanded down to keep one side flat. My BIL finally made one for me.
Also, for some low plush fabrics (like cotton velveteen, crushed velvet), you can use a really thick towel as your "velvet board" and it'll prevent the nap from flattening out. Just be sure not to press too hard. |
Dale, thanks for the tip on the "velvet board'.

I took a round wooden stick ( sorry my english is not so good) and wrapped some newpapers tightly around it and and then a old sheet that I had and sew it together by hand and I am using this for a few years now and pressing trousers I coulnīt go without it. I saw this tip in a sewing book quite awhile back.
