This class is a one day workshop held in Gill Arnold's Training Studio in Birmingham. The class runs from 10am - 5pm.

The studio is bright and well lit. It has a large block of tables in the middle of the room giving a good size working area for each student. The chairs are comfortable, height adjustable 'office' type chairs on castors. Along the walls of the room are 6 Bernina sewing machines each housed in a Horn cabinet which is equipped with sewing essentials -scissors, pins, tape measure, marking pencil etc.

There are 3 ironing boards and steam irons. Each 'pressing station' has professional pressing equipment and cloths.

There is a small rest area at the back of the premises where students can make coffee and sit and eat their lunch. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided and there is a fridge where students can store their lunch and cold drinks.

Gill has written a series of articles 'Trousers that fit' in Sewing World magazine.

In this class we made a pair of classic trousers, covering how to sew a built-in girdle, pockets, zips and more.

This is a small class for 6 students. The class is well structured. All materials are provided for the workshop. The trousers are cut out, marked and packed in a bag along with a copy of the class notes which contain clear photos and diagrams.

During the first part of the workshop Gill gave an introduction and talked about selecting a pattern and how to make pattern adjustments for fit.

This talk lasted for about 1 hour. We then took a break for coffee.

After coffee we began to construct our trousers. Gill demonstrated how to press the trouser pleats and leg creases professionally using the pressing ham, roller. She discussed and demonstrated how to cure bagginess in the seat of trousers and how to prevent gaping pockets. And then showed us how to construct the pocket extension to obtain a built-in girdle. When we had all successfully reached this stage of constructing our trousers we took a break for lunch.

Gill showed us how to sew the zip fly and fly extension and then the back dart and gave us all individual attention when we needed help. She demonstrated the correct sewing sequence for sewing the side seams and inside leg and crotch seams. And she showed us how to construct the two-piece shaped waistband which is hinged so that it does not gape at the back when you sit down.

Gill is a very knowledgeable and generous teacher. She has told us that is happy to answer any questions later if we call or email her.

I enjoyed the class enormously. Alas, the trousers - a size 12 - don't fit me (but then no trousers fit without lots of adjustment to the pattern first) But my friend who came to the class with me has finished her pair and wore them to work yesterday and got nice compliments about the cut and fit.

I would recommend this class to anyone wanting to learn more about trouser construction.
