I cut my swatch of fabric when I'm heading off to the store to buy buttons (as I rarely buy them before the garment is done) and I make a slit in the swatch to mimic a buttonhole. That way I can pop the carded button easily through the slit and get a better idea of how it looks against the fabric.

This is something I've been doing for years, I can't even remember where I read this suggestion, and I find it very helpful. I hope this tip helps someone new!

Good idea. But, I have to admit that i have made clothes around buttons I bought, & really wanted to wear.

I have also been doing this for years and find it a great aide. Unfortunately lately I've been encountering buttons sold incased in plastic. Very annoying as you can't feel or see them as precisely as I would like.

I sometimes as for a snippet of the fabric in the store, cut a slit and play with button choices right there. I LOVE buttons!!
