I read this hint in Claire Shaeffer's Fabric Sewing Guide
" Keep your patterns up-to-date. If they're more than two years old, think twice before using them. Fashion silhouettes change rapidly; frequently imperceptible on the pattern drawing, these changes make the difference between fashionable and passe."
I often use older patterns, but end up altering them for a more up-to-date fit. Even the slightest change in neckline can make the difference in how en vogue something can look. Look at new fashions and patterns with a close eye and note design changes. No wonder I always like making a new pattern even though it may be similar to one I already have. Now I'm vindicated! |
Ah-ha! I'm showing this to my husband. :-)

Oh know, what does this say for me, with my new interest in buying and sewing with vintage 40's patterns? (smile)

"Keep your patterns up to date". Ummm - maybe not. I'm having a fine time pulling out my late 1970/early 1980 patterns to use for my daughter. Bonus: she can wear the sizes I bought back then. Heaven knows they don't fit ME anymore! But having these old patterns certainly doesn't keep me from buying new ones.....

Nooooooooo!!!!!! I find it so hard to throw away a pattern. And I have an unnatural fondness for vintage patterns. None of this stops me from buying current ones though.

I agree - I seem to always buy new patterns, but I have my old faithfuls and older patterns that I still hang on to. A pencil skirt is a pencil skirt, is it not? Besides, those older patterns will soon be in the retro section!
