Just wanted to tell you all about how good it was to take a class from Connie Crawford. I took a 4 dat class in Highland, Michigan last week. The first day we talked about fashion forecasts and she demonstrated how to make a body double using packing tape and plastic bags. Very useful to see her do it as I would never have pulled the tape tight enough on my own. She then draped a fitting block on the body double and the next day fitted it to the person. She also demoed how to draft your own pant pattern using your measurements. I was lucky enough to be the person chosen for this. My homework was to sew the pants up to bring back to class in the morning. The pants fit like a glove and she did very little tweeking on them. I am so happy to have this as pants never fit correctly in the crotch and waist.

After fitting my pants we discussed how to use a fitting block to make a blouse block and how to use the blouse block to make any kind of blouse you want. We also learned how to make a straight skirt block off of the pant black and then how to change it to make any kind of skirt you want.

The last day and a half was spent with Connie either draping a bodice fitting block or altering a commercial pattern to fit for each person in the class. She talked at length about how to evaluate a pattern for balance and fit. Her big thing is that the pattern must be balanced and in proportion. It really makes a lot of sense when she explains it. You will never look at a pattern the same way again.

Connie was in the fashion industry in various capacities for many years and she has some great stories to illustrate why you need to know the things she is teaching. She also has authored several books and has then for sale if you wish to buy them. You certainly could have gone through the whole class without the books if you wished. Hip curves and French curves will become your best friend, as will tape and markers.

Our class of about 30 women was so please that we have talked her into coming back as soon as she can for an advanced class. We all felt that her knowledge was sooo valuable.

So, needless to say, I recommend that if you have an opportunity to take any kind of class with Connie that you just do it. You will learn alot.

Oooohhh....I am sooooo envious! I took a 2-day class from her and loved every minute! You have really captured the experience of being in a class w/ her. I was lucky enough to have her drape a bodice on me! My friend and I were open-mouthed the whole time at the info she shared/taught. I want to learn how to use the blocks for making other garments and for adapting commercial patterns; we did not have time for this aspect. I was astonished at the sheer amount of information she conveyed. In our class she barely paused for a sip of water or lunch, though we certainly did. I bought as many of her books and patterns as I could afford at the time and I am glad that I did. I really needed to follow along in the pattern drafting book while she demoed the pants draft. We talked about having her come back; this makes me more determined to work on it! Thanks for your review! I am a Connie-convert: I was very skeptical about her before her lecture. Five minutes into it and I was SOLD!

I'm envious too! I just saw an episode of Sew Much more on DYI that featured Connie. I really liked her tell-it-like-it-is manner regarding the problems with commercial patterns. Butterick just came out with some of Connie's patterns, I can't wait to see them.

I too am a Connie-convert. I took a vacation to Tacoma and while there took Connie's three day seminar. It was great! Her wealth of experience and information is tremendous. Three days was just a taste and it made me want to go to more classes. What we need is a Connie University - where we could go for practice and guidance.

Lera -- I was also at the Connie Crawford seminar and was so impressed with how well your pants fit! I've been making all my bodice blocks: armhole princess, shoulder princess and darted blouse blocks. I used my shoulder princess block to create/copy a McCall pattern and it turned out great! It's wonderful to have something fit so well. I highly recommend Connie's classes to everyone!
